Here's something most people have never seen up close: a tea set whose glaze is alive with the finest of cracks. This is Ge-kiln (哥窑, gē yáo) porcelain, from one of the celebrated kilns of China's Song dynasty (960–1279).
Centuries ago, potters noticed that as porcelain cooled, the glaze sometimes cracked into a delicate web of lines. Rather than hide it, they made it the signature. That network of lines is called 开片 (kāi piàn, "opening veins"). On this set the crackle is 蝉翼开片 (chán yì kāi piàn) — "cicada-wing crackle" — an extremely fine, net-like mesh so subtle it reads like a whisper of texture across the surface, not a bold pattern.
The glaze itself is a 色釉 (sè yòu), a coloured glaze: a deep, calm green that falls somewhere between green and slate-grey, even and modern. Wound around it are 红铜回纹龙带 (hóng tóng huí wén lóng dài) — copper-red decorative bands bearing the 祥龙 (xiáng lóng), the "auspicious dragon," a traditional Chinese dragon motif that stands for good fortune and protection. It's a quiet detail you'll find curling along the piece, the kind that rewards a second look.
None of the crackle is damage — it is the whole point, and it is why Ge-kiln wares have been loved for more than 800 years. A simple five-step path to a calm cup. Times are a starting point — adjust to your own taste.五步静心泡法。时间为起点，可依口味自行调整。
- Warm the wares. Rinse the gaiwan, pot, and cups with hot water to wake the clay and hold the heat.温器。以热水温润盖碗、茶壶与杯，唤醒陶土、聚拢温度。
- Add the leaves. Start with about 5 g of tea for a gaiwan, or to your taste.投茶。盖碗约投茶 5 克，或随口味增减。
- First steep. Pour water just off the boil; steep 10–20 seconds for the first infusion.首泡。注水稍离沸，首泡浸润 10–20 秒。
- Pour & share. Decant into the fairness cup, then into each tasting cup — even and unhurried.出汤分茶。先入公道杯，再匀入各品茗杯——均匀而从容。
